Air pollution: allergies are not the only side effect

Air pollution is often associated with allergy symptoms, such as red eyes and sneezing. But the reality is more complex: the air we breathe every day contains harmful particles and gases that can affect our health far beyond simple allergies.

The main sources come from heating, furnishings, and daily activities, generating a mix of pollutants capable of reaching the lungs and, sometimes, the blood.

Effects on health and mood

Once absorbed by the body, these substances can cause inflammation and oxidative stress that affect various systems. The cardiovascular system is among the first to be affected: prolonged exposure can affect blood pressure and blood vessel health, increasing the risk of heart disease.

The brain is also vulnerable to air pollution, which can affect concentration, memory, and sleep quality. At the same time, attention is growing on its effects on mental health: living in highly polluted areas appears to be linked to increased anxiety, irritability, and chronic stress, demonstrating how much the environment affects our psychological balance.

The most sensitive age groups and the importance of indoor environments

The most concerning effects are seen in children and during pregnancy. Early exposure can reduce lung development, promote respiratory disorders, and affect cognitive development, while in the fetus it can affect organ growth. Added to this is the role of indoor environments, which often further worsen air quality: household chemicals, mold, poor ventilation, and cooking fumes contribute to constant, often unconscious, exposure.

Air pollution is a public health problem that goes far beyond seasonal allergies. Understanding its effects means becoming aware of the importance of protecting the air we breathe and adopting more careful daily behaviors, both outdoors and indoors. Breathing clean air isn’t a minor detail: it’s a fundamental condition for our present and future well-being.
