April 7: World Health Day

World Health Day, celebrated each year on April 7, is an opportunity to reflect on how our daily habits affect global health. A key theme that emerges about this day is the importance of indoor air quality for people’s well-being. Although we are all aware of the dangers of outdoor air pollution, we often forget that the air we breathe inside our homes, schools, offices and other indoor environments can also have a significant impact on our health.

Indoor air quality refers to the composition of the air we breathe inside buildings. It depends on a number of factors, including the presence of contaminants such as particulate matter, toxic gases (such as radon gas), allergens (pollen, dust, animal dander), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted by paints, detergents, furniture and electronic devices, and also the humidity and ventilation of spaces. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 90 percent of people worldwide breathe polluted air, with a large portion of this exposure occurring indoors. The COVID-19 pandemic has also highlighted how important good indoor air management is to prevent the spread of viral diseases. Poor indoor air quality can be responsible for a range of respiratory disorders and other long-term health issues.

Poor indoor air quality can have strong impacts on human health, both in the short and long term. Major adverse effects include respiratory diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, and other lung conditions, headaches and fatigue, infections, and cardiovascular problems that, according to recent studies, increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Taking care of the air in your home means taking care of your health

Air pollution is a global problem that is not limited to urban or industrial boundaries.

World Health Day invites us to reflect on the importance of indoor air quality, a fundamental aspect of our lives. Protecting the air we breathe inside our everyday spaces is essential to prevent respiratory illnesses, allergies and other diseases, as well as to improve our overall well-being. With small steps and increased awareness, we can all help create healthier environments for healthier and better lives.
