Back to School: more time indoors, more attention to air quality

Every year, September marks a new beginning: the summer break ends and we return to routine, with backpacks to pack, homework to complete, and schedules to stick to. But the return to school doesn’t just change our daily routines: it also changes the time and space we live in.

With the end of summer, we spend much of the day indoors, such as classrooms, bedrooms, kitchens, and study spaces. For children and teens, this means spending up to 90% of their time indoors.

Contrary to what you might think, the air inside homes and school buildings can be more polluted than the air outside, due to factors such as the presence of radon, a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is dangerous if inhaled for long periods; VOCs (volatile organic compounds) released by furnishings, paints, and detergents; excess CO2; poor ventilation; and high humidity.

All these elements, often invisible and odorless, can affect children’s health and well-being, compromising concentration and sleep, and increasing the risk of allergies and respiratory disorders.

Why is it important to monitor the air we breathe?

Knowing what we breathe is the first step to protecting the health of those we love.
Air is one of the most vital and, at the same time, most undervalued resources in daily life. We breathe approximately 20,000 times a day, yet we rarely stop to ask ourselves what we’re actually putting into our bodies.

Especially for children, who are more sensitive and vulnerable to pollutants, it’s essential to ensure clean air in the places where they study, sleep, and grow.

Monitoring air quality means transforming the invisible into clear and useful data. It means being able to take action: ventilate when necessary, choose safer materials, regulate humidity, prevent risky situations.

In short, it means actively caring for your family’s well-being, day after day. Because health doesn’t depend solely on what we eat or how much we move, but also—and above all—on what we breathe.
