December 10: World Human Rights Day

Every year on December 10, the world celebrates World Human Rights Day, established to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948. This fundamental document reaffirms the dignity and inalienable rights of every person.
Among these, alongside the more well-known rights of freedom, equality, education, and protection, a principle that represents the very foundation of life is increasingly emerging: the right to a healthy environment.

The right to breathe clean air is a necessity, not a privilege

Breathing clean air is a daily act we often take for granted, yet it addresses one of the most pressing global challenges. Air pollution is currently responsible for millions of premature deaths worldwide, with significant impacts especially on children, the elderly, and vulnerable people. Access to clean air is therefore not just an environmental issue, but a universal human right, deeply linked to health, quality of life, and social justice.

In recent years, many nations and international organizations have formally recognized this right, maintaining that no one should be forced to live in an environment that compromises their physical and mental well-being. The right to breathe clean air is part of a broader vision: the right to live well, which means being able to grow, work, and move in safe, inclusive, and healthy places. It’s not just about surviving, but about living fully and with dignity.
In this sense, protecting one’s living environments is not an abstract goal, but a necessary condition for ensuring a quality existence for present and future generations.

World Human Rights Day as an opportunity for awareness

As we celebrate this day, we are called to remember that rights are not static achievements, but responsibilities to be protected and strengthened.
In a world facing climate, health, and economic crises, recognizing the environment as an integral part of human rights represents a fundamental step toward a more just future. World Human Rights Day reminds us that building a better world is possible, but requires everyone’s participation.
